Dr. MacPhee donates to snowsuit fund

A Smiths Falls dentist, who is a busy father of four young children, knows the challenges of clothing them all.

That’s why Dr. Michael MacPhee, or Dr. Michael MacPhee and Associates, has given $1,500 to the local snowsuit fund.

“I know how hard it is,” he said as he handed Steve Orr a the cheque on Thursday, Nov. 15. Orr is co-ordinating the snowsuit effort for Lanark County/Smiths Falls where some 600 suits are needed.

“This will help me buy a lot of snowsuits,” Orr said, grateful for the financial boost.

Orr purchases about 300 snowsuits, and the rest are gently used donations. Drop boxes are set out at local schools where they are collected. Rideau Valley Cleaners in Smiths Falls donates its services to dry-clean the winter gear.

“Giant Tiger, Perth, gives me a great deal on them,” Orr said, who admitted he may have to expand his circle to include more stores in which to look.

“It’s hard to find jackets for the older boys: 7/8 and 10/12, but that is probably for less than 10 families.

Orr said it’s a huge community effort and he’s thankful for all the help he receives. He has received donated office space at the Gallipeau Centre where the suits are sorted.

“And Joe Quattrocchi has donated his time to pick up and deliver suits for Perth and Carleton Place. It’s quite an operation … a massive undertaking, and we couldn’t do it without everyone’s help.”

MacPhee said he enjoys giving back to his community.

“I want to help the kids in the community,” he said. “I know how hard it can be to clothe four children.”
